Ann M. Powers

Ann provided extensive background knowledge to aid in my son’s college selection process. Her investigative questions regarding my son’s strengths and interests directed her research, which was invaluable. She also kept us aware of important timelines for financial aid and ways to strategize with admissions offices. Her assistance throughout the process made it all so much more manageable! I highly recommend her for guidance.
Mother of a student going to St. Olaf’s College
While going through the college search process with my two children, I noticed the overwhelming amount of available information and the tremendous stress in their lives as they prepared for college admission tests and applications.

My Mission: Getting you accepted at several “best fit” colleges where you will THRIVE.

While each child had different needs, I decided to step into the process, not as a helicopter Mom dictating their every move, but as a strategic partner who could tactfully ask them questions, prod them to meet deadlines and guide them through the planning of college visits.

I loved celebrating with them when the “fat acceptance envelope” appeared and once they were at college, strategizing with them about the challenges of everyday life.

My perspective as a mother is only one facet of my education as a college admissions counselor… read more below about my professional background.

Professional Background

Professionally, I have spent fifteen years on Wall Street as an equity and debt analyst and several more years as an equity portfolio manager. In these positions, I have been recognized for my insightful research, analytical and writing skills.

I like to look for “big picture” ideas and analyze issues related to a problem, before coming to a reasoned recommendation. I use these same skills to help students take both an “eagle” and “microscope” view of their own college search and in the process, help them reduce the fear and anxiety connected with it. I spend hours with the student and parents getting to know the student’s personality, interests and career goals, to help identify what the best college options are.

I have a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Notre Dame and a master’s degree in Urban Studies from Loyola University of Chicago. Recently, I have also completed a certificate in College Counseling (with distinction) from UCLA, had an internship in the college counseling office at Montclair Kimberley Academy in New Jersey, and attended the intensive Summer Training Institute given by IECA.

Ann Powers Background
I have a certificate in Adult Career Planning and Development from New York University and am certified to administer the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator(MBTI).

One of my key strengths is helping students “connect the dots” to understand their own preferences, interests, work styles, skills and values in order to make the most of their high school years and a better college choice.

I am a member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA), the National Association of College Admission Counselors (NACAC) and the New Jersey Association of College Admission Counselors (NJACAC). As a member of these associations, I participate in a listserv to keep on top of industry trends and issues. Additionally, I spend a substantial amount of time attending industry conferences and visiting colleges.
